Once upon a time, I visited New Zealand (2013, to be specific). I was there in my professional capacity as an astronomer, but wherever my science self goes, my art self necessarily follows.
My motel was near Lake Tekapo for a portion of the journey, and I managed to get to the lake just before sunset in spring (September). The sun was moving fast, but I managed to get two shots of the church lit by the setting sun before the shadows took over.
My camera at the time was not a bit of professional kit; it was a true tourist-grade camera, and I was never happy with the image I captured. But I’ve learned a lot over the last 11 years, and software has improved, too. I was finally able, this afternoon, to make this the photo I saw in my head when I took it. I used Capture One and some advanced selection and editing tools to make it look as if I had taken it with a more modern, more professional camera.
This edit of the data shows the scene as I remember it in my heart.
