Hairy Woodpecker
Not sure how these got the name "hairy"; they are very much like Downy (who got the better name, for sure), but larger.
I rarely see the woodpeckers in the trees; mostly at the feeder. They tend to stay at the edges of the yard or beyond when in trees; they are too far away to spot or photograph. They are not very skittish (unlike the flickers, who will scatter at a whisper), and make good subjects.
Sony a7R IV camera, with Canon 300mm lens with 2x extender.
I got a shot of him departing when our dog Lily approached, not quite in focus but I think it is still a cool picture. Makes me sad not to have wings of my own.
You can see the damage the woodpeckers have done to the posts on the back deck to the left. I’m not that concerned (the fix is not such a hard one), but Donna gets angry at them. Hey: if you invite woodpeckers to the party, they gonna peck the wood…
