On one level, clouds are just clouds; maybe they might enhance the look of a landscape or affect the mood of a photo. But I find clouds and their shapes pretty interesting—those shapes tell us what is happening in the atmosphere.
Not that I’m enough of a meteorologist to say what that is. I still enjoy the variety.
The clouds above were unusually sharply defined and quite chaotic. I love the level of detail and shading at upper left, for example.
The clouds above, also photographed from the back porch, look like the province of Quebec in Canada, a Canadian friend assures me. It’s just a cool cloud to me, however. This type of cloud, directly backlit by the sun, proved very difficult to photograph. The edges of the cloud are really really bright since the sunlight is passing almost directly through them.
In the above photo, I pointed the camera away from the sun to give me a more reasonable level of illumination to photograph. It was another area with lots of small details; the wind must have been really whipping up the clouds that day.
