Mt. Rainier Makes a Brief Appearance
It's winter on the mountain, and it collects clouds like a hoarder.
Glimpses of Mt. Rainier have been few and far between lately. I was driving home from a quick lunch when I realized the “mountain was out” as we say here. I pulled into the driveway of a home under construction and grabbed three photos at 200mm. I combined them into a panorama, and given the great contrast of rocks, snow, and trees, decided to make it black and white.
The sky was merely overcast to the naked eye, but the camera recorded the subtle shades between clouds and the conversion to black and white brought them into stark contrast.
70-200mm Sony lens on A7RIV camera, three shots handheld. ISO 100, f/5.6, 1/3600th second.
Here’s the shot in natural color. Both of these images are much larger than fit on a web page; click on the image to load it and then click again if necessary to magnify it to 100%. The level of detail is amazing—thanks to the overcast, there were no rising waves of disturbed air to distort the image.
Great choice to try this in black and white. Love the contrast!
