Finally had a clear morning, so I headed out early to get some photos of Mt. Rainier.
I packed two cameras: the Sony with the zoom telephoto, and the Phase One with the 120mm Macro.
The photo above was taken with the telephoto, at 840mm focal length (I used a 1.4x extender to make the telephoto longer). The image is made from three shots combined in Affinity Photo.
The image contrast has been enhanced considerably to show details of the mountain. Due to forward scattering of sunlight, details were obscured quite a bit in the originals. Here a photo of the scene with the 120mm lens:
I did increase the contrast a bit in this photo, but with all that foreground detail, I didn’t use a lot of contrast; it would have made the foreground nearly black! But it does give you some idea of how little contrast was present in morning light.
There’s still a lot of snow on the mountain. Temperature drops about 3ºF for each thousand feet of elevation, and the upper reaches of Rainier are at 14,000 feet. With temperature at sea level around 60º this morning, the peak of Mt. Rainier would be about 18ºF.
