Purple finches are not really purple, though you could make a good case for magenta. I have been studying up to tell purple and house finches apart, and I’ve got it now: house finches are orange to red, with mostly just a touch of color around the head and breast (sometimes extending further). Purple finches are quite red, kind of a bluish red that I suppose someone once confused with purple. See above.
Here is a purple finch hanging out with a Pine Siskin and a Goldfinch. They aren’t arguing—but if one more bird shows up, there’s going to be a lot of angry fluttering.
They are common here on the feeder. For some reason we also have a lot of bluebirds and catbirds here as well.
